Richard Deverell

Chief Operating Officer, BBC North

Portrait of Richard Deverell

Richard Deverell is the Chief Operating Officer for BBC North. Richard was appointed to this role in March 2009 and started on a full time basis in November 2009.

His new job is at the heart of the creation of a major new network centre in the North of England, which includes the biggest move in the BBC’s history – with Children’s, 5 Live, Sport, Learning and parts of Future, Media and Technology relocating from London in 2011.

In this role, Richard will be responsible for developing and implementing the strategic and operational infrastructure for BBC North. He will help ensure the right technology, partnerships, ways of working and talent are in place to deliver the BBC’s ambitions as it seeks to create a media centre for the Internet age at Media City UK in Salford Quays, Greater Manchester.

Richard was Controller, BBC Children’s from 2006 to 2009.  He was previously Head of News Interactive, responsible for the BBC News website and before that, Head of Strategy and Marketing at BBC News.

Richard joined the BBC in 1992 in the strategy department where he worked on a variety of projects including BBC Charter renewal and developing the BBC’s response to multi-channel television distribution and the internet.

Prior to joining the BBC, Richard worked in management consultancy.  He read Natural Sciences at Cambridge and is married with three children.
